Grid operators in Berlin and Brandenburg
Every grid operator has its own portals, forms and technical connection conditions. We know the routes and submit the applications for you, with the documents the respective grid operator requires.
- Stromnetz Berlin – the Berlin distribution grid. Medium voltage here is 10 kV. Connections up to 800 kVA with one transformer go through the customer portal; for more than 3.5 MVA, Stromnetz Berlin allocates capacity in an annual allocation procedure.
- E.DIS Netz – the large regional grid operator in Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with an online application for grid connections.
- MITNETZ Strom – for parts of Brandenburg as well as Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. Larger capacities require a preliminary check; capacity is only reserved bindingly once the construction cost contribution has been paid.
- WEMAG Netz – for western Mecklenburg and the Prignitz, with its own grid connection portal.
In your town, a municipal utility may also be the grid operator. Which one is responsible is shown on your electricity bill or can be found from the address; we clarify this in the site check.
Grid capacity: Berlin and Brandenburg are in demand
Demand for connection capacity is high, driven above all by data centres. According to trade press reports, around 2,300 MVA were requested in the 2025 Berlin allocation procedure, with 365 MVA available. At MITNETZ, data centre requests totalling 16.8 GW were pending at the end of 2025.
For a mid-sized company this does not mean no connection is possible. Most businesses need far less than 3.5 MVA. It does mean: apply early, justify the capacity properly and do not apply for more than you need. A battery storage system can help you manage with a smaller connection capacity because it absorbs peaks.
What PV yields in Berlin and Brandenburg
According to simulations with the EU tool PVGIS, one kilowatt of PV capacity in Berlin and Brandenburg generates around 950 to 1,060 kilowatt-hours a year, depending on orientation. On a commercial flat roof with modules on low-tilt mounts it is closer to 950; facing south at a steeper angle, a good 1,050. As a rule of thumb, each kilowatt of capacity needs five to seven square metres of roof area.
- ≈ 1,058 kWh/kWp
- Berlin, south, 35° tilt (PVGIS 5.3)
- ≈ 954 kWh/kWp
- Berlin, flat roof, south, 10° mounting (PVGIS 5.3)
- ≈ 1,042 kWh/kWp
- Potsdam, optimal orientation (PVGIS 5.3)
Funding and obligations in Berlin and Brandenburg
- Berlin, SolarPLUS – in its part L, the 2026 funding guideline also supports commercial and industrial buildings, including battery storage installed together with a new PV system, with a share depending on company size. We check whether applications are currently being accepted before the project starts; funding is only available if you apply before the project begins.
- Berlin, Solar Act – Berlin requires PV to be installed on new buildings and when roofs undergo major renovation.
- Brandenburg, ILB – the investment bank’s “Erneuerbare Energien Brandenburg” programme funds, among other things, PV on car parks and agri-PV, also with storage.
- Nationwide – KfW promotional loans for PV and storage and BAFA grants for energy efficiency and waste heat.
Funding programmes change often. Which programmes are currently open: Funding overview.
Data centres in Berlin and Brandenburg: what it means for grid connections
The figures from the region show how much connection capacity is in demand. According to trade press reports, Berlin’s 2025 allocation procedure received 70 requests; 37 were allocated capacity and ten received none. By the end of 2025, MITNETZ had firmly reserved nine data center projects with a combined capacity of around 1.4 GW.
Stromnetz Berlin allocates capacities above 3.5 MVA only through this annual procedure. Applicants who are allocated capacity receive a binding offer within a further six months at the latest. The procedure due to start in 2026 has been postponed; when it will begin is currently open.
For an AI data center at a mid-sized company, this is usually not the obstacle: a container with a 60 kW continuous load or a few GPU racks are far below 3.5 MVA. The question is whether the service connection and transformer can carry the additional continuous load. According to manufacturers, medium-voltage transformers currently have delivery times of six to twelve months; that is why we clarify the connection before any hardware is ordered.
Grid operators can already offer flexible connection agreements under which the consumption or feed-in capacity is limited statically or dynamically (Section 17(2b) of the Energy Industry Act, EnWG). In practice, a battery can absorb such a limit. A bill to reform grid connection procedures is before the Bundestag but has not yet been passed.
- > 3.5 MVA
- at Stromnetz Berlin only via the annual allocation procedure
- 6–12 months
- delivery time for medium-voltage transformers according to manufacturers, as of June 2026
- 300 kW
- threshold of the Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG) for data centres, non-redundant rated connection capacity

Medium voltage at Stromnetz Berlin in practice
Berlin’s medium-voltage grid operates at 10 kV and is built as open rings, with the 110 kV high-voltage grid above it. Depending on capacity, there are three routes to a connection.
The technical connection conditions at medium voltage are based on the application rule VDE-AR-N 4110. In February 2026, the German energy industry association BDEW presented voluntary model wording that includes, among other things, a circuit breaker from 1 MVA transformer rating and a response time of ten working days for enquiries. We check which requirements your grid operator applies as part of the application.
| Capacity | Route | Note |
|---|---|---|
| up to 800 kVA | Customer portal | one transformer, connection to the open 10 kV ring |
| above 800 kVA | directly to the grid connection team | |
| above 3.5 MVA | Allocation | participation in the annual procedure is mandatory |

E.DIS, MITNETZ, WEMAG: what is different
E.DIS Netz
Regional grid operator in Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. For medium voltage, its own connection conditions TAB 2070 apply, based on VDE-AR-N 4110. Applications are made online, and the grid connection monitor shows their status.
MITNETZ Strom
For connections from 150 kW to 10 MW, the rapid grid connection check (SNAP) comes first. Capacity is only firmly reserved once the construction cost contribution has been paid; from 5 MW there is a separate capacity offer.
WEMAG Netz
Responsible for western Mecklenburg and the Prignitz. Connections are registered via the grid connection portal; capacities from 200 kW follow a separate route via medium and high voltage.
Construction cost contribution
Consumers who receive a new or increased connection generally pay a construction cost contribution. For battery storage, grid operators may charge it based on the capacity price model (Federal Court of Justice, EnVR 1/24). For pure generation plants it is excluded under current law.
Commercial battery storage in Berlin and Brandenburg: what it is good for
A battery in a business typically has three jobs: shifting solar power from midday to the afternoon and evening, shaving load peaks and relieving a tight connection capacity. Your load profile shows which of these matters for you.
With power metering, part of the grid charge is based on the highest quarter-hour of the year (Section 17(2) of the Electricity Network Charges Ordinance, StromNEV). A battery that absorbs exactly these peaks lowers the capacity price. At low voltage with up to 100,000 kilowatt-hours a year there is no capacity price (Section 17(6) StromNEV); there, self-consumption is what counts.
Commercial batteries are typically designed as two-hour systems. According to the manufacturer’s datasheet, a 215 kWh storage cabinet charges and discharges at a maximum of 0.5 C, i.e. around 107 kW. For lithium iron phosphate cells, manufacturers of commercial batteries state, for example, at least 6,000 cycles before capacity drops to 70 per cent, measured at 25 °C and half the rated power.
Sized to your load profile: Commercial battery storage, shaving peaks: Peak shaving.
Funding in Brandenburg in more detail
The “Erneuerbare Energien Brandenburg” (Renewable Energy Brandenburg) programme of the state investment bank ILB is co-financed with EU funds. The guideline has applied since 11 December 2025 and runs until 30 June 2027. It funds, among other things, PV systems over car parks and agrivoltaics, each also with storage, as well as floating PV, deep geothermal energy and fish-friendly hydropower.
Eligible applicants are small and medium-sized enterprises with a site in Brandenburg, as well as municipal utilities and energy suppliers. PV on hall roofs is not part of the programme; car parks that already fall under the solar obligation of the building code are excluded. Battery funding under Brandenburg’s storage programme is currently suspended.
For rooftop systems and batteries, the nationwide KfW 270 subsidised loan is an option, financing up to 100 per cent of eligible costs. For efficiency measures there are the modules of BAFA’s energy and resource efficiency programme for businesses, for example for energy management software or using waste heat from a data centre.
Funding is only available if you apply before the project begins. You submit the applications to the ILB, your bank or BAFA; we supply the technical details and a quotation broken down by eligible items.
